TOEFL Listening: I couldn't agree more...

Over the years, many people have asked me about this type of TOEFL Listening Comprehension question.

So, here's what you need to know, with a detailed explanation of why.

But first, let's see some examples of the type of question we will be looking at:

Example #1

W: This coffee is really terrible.
M: I couldn't agree more.
N: What does the man mean?

(A) He would like more coffee.
(B) He thinks the woman should complain.
(C) He also dislikes the coffee.
(D) He thinks the coffee is acceptable.

Example #2

W: This is just about the worst coffee I've ever had.
M: I couldn't agree less.
N: What does the man mean?

(A) He would like more coffee.
(B) He thinks the woman should complain.
(C) He also dislikes the coffee.
(D) He thinks the coffee does not taste bad.

Example #3

M: Hey, I heard you tried that new Japanese restaurant around the corner. How was it?
W: Couldn't have been better!
N: What does the woman mean?

(A) She has not been to the restaurant yet.
(B) She enjoyed the restaurant very much.
(C) She thinks that some of the menu items are better than others.
(D) She plans to eat at the restaurant soon.

Example #4

W: Justine, Joanna told me that you'd seen the student sculpture exhibit on the quad. What'd you think of it?
W: I've seen better!
N: What does Justine mean?

(A) The exhibit is not as impressive as other exhibits that she has seen.
(B) She was not able to see the exhibit.
(C) It was difficult to enjoy the exhibit.
(D) Her eyes are troubling her.

Example #5

W: Carl, how you feeling today?
M: Couldn't be better!
N: What does the man mean?

(A) He feels great.
(B) She was not able to see the exhibit.
(C) It was difficult to enjoy the exhibit.
(D) Her eyes are troubling her.

Why They're Confusing
These questions are confusing mainly because they introduce two or three elements to think of. In other words, the overall meaning of the statement is dependent on evaluating one thing in relation to another. The trickiest ones are the ones that use a negative such as not in the sentence. But don't worry, if you have a hard time with these questions, it means simply that you are normal--the human brain, no matter what language it is familiar with, is not wired to process negatives and double negatives quickly.

Let's look at a "progression" of statements to put these ideas into context. I will use the simulated TOEFL question about Carl, and how he feels today:

Statement: I feel very good today.

Meaning: I feel very good today.

Discussion: Easy, right? Right! This is a very normal sentence for us, for our brains, and for our language.

Okay, let's make this one a bit harder...

Statement: I feel better today than I felt yesterday.

Meaning: My mood today > My mood yesterday. Or, today is good; yesterday was not so good.

Discussion: Still easy, right? Right! We are comparing moods for two days--the mood for today is better than that of yesterday. So far, so good, right?

Statement: Today I could feel better.

Meaning: I could feel better today. Therefore, today my mood is not perfect, since there is still some room for improvement.

Discussion: Getting a little bit harder now, but if you understand the sentence "I could feel better" , then you're almost there! Remember your modals--could is often used to express the idea that you have the ability to do something, even if you haven't done it.

Statement: Today I could not feel better.

Meaning: Today I feel perfect.

Discussion:There is no more room for improvement. Having a better mood is not possible. Therefore, I can say that today my mood is perfect. Therefore, I could not feel better today.

TestMagic Explanation
The key here is to realize that when we hear something like "I could not feel better," or "I could not feel worse," we are saying that we are already at a limit--either the minimum or the maximum. So, if I say that I could not feel better, I'm feeling "perfect," (okay, that's not really possible in the real world, but we're talking about language here). And if I'm sick with the flu, I just lost my job, and my dog just bit me, I can say "I could not feel worse," meaning that I'm already at the limit. Remember, if you're all the way at the bottom, you can't get any lower. And if you're already at the top, you can't get any higher!

Any questions? Erin Billy and the TestMagicians will be glad to try to help you in our live, interactive forum.

Underlines
Each question of this type has one grammar mistake. Choose the underlined portion that has the mistake.

Example:

I are tired, but I will study anyway.

(A) are
(B) but
(C) will
(D) anyway

In this case, we should choose (A) since I are tired is incorrect; the sentence should read I am tired, but I will study anyway.

Blanks
For this type of question, choose the answer choice that best completes the sentence.

Example:

I ______ tired, but I will study anyway.

(A) is
(B) being
(C) am
(D) to be

In this case, we should choose (C) since the sentence should read I am tired, but I will study anyway.

End neg gadaad nohriin IBT toefliin tuhai yarianaas ish tatav..

I took the new official iBT TOEFL test on Dec. 17. I felt my reading and listening is fine, but the writing and speaking parts are more difficult.
The style of free iBT training test is quite similiar to the real one I took, so it is much helpful for me to better understand and prepare the test. The difference is that I met five passages in the reading part instead of three in practice. However, they were easy. The advantage of iBT is that we can put the passage and questions on one screen to be conrespondent to each other.

In my opinion, listening is easier too. The disciplines such as astronomy or biology at the beginning give you hints to prepare. The time scroll bar also help you get rid of anxiety.

I think the second writing is more difficult for it should be 300 words around while I can only write 260 because time is not enough for me.

As to the speaking part, I think it will be better if I can practice more before attending the real test.

Anyway, I am here writing my own experience about the test. The iBT test is quite new and the free training test is very useful. If there could be more training tests it will be much helpful for the test-takers.

The Next Generation IBT TOEFL (by Ambien Malecot)
A number of years ago Educational Testing Services (ETS), the people responsible for the TOEFL test, brought the test into the computer age by transitioning it from a paper-based test to a computer-based test. This allowed them to stop the practice of previewing questions and answers while listening to material, and it allowed them to add some unique testing questions, such as matching up items and placing a sentence within a paragraph. It also allowed them to individualize the listening and grammar sections of the test by catering items to the ability of the student. A student’s score was no longer dependent on the number of correct answer he or she gave but the degree of difficulty of questions he or she was able to answer correctly.

However, the computer-based TOEFL was an assembly of separate skills - reading, listening, grammar, and writing. In this format it was possible for students to learn tricks to increase their performance in each of these areas, a practice that did not reflect their true ability to handle the language. Students could demonstrate their reading skills separate from their listening skills and writing skills, but true language is seldom so fragmented. This weakness in the test was made worse by the absence of a speaking component. If a student wanted to demonstrate a competency in this skill, he or she had to take a separate speaking test such as the TSE, the Test of Spoken English, also produced by ETS. It became obvious that a change in the TOEFL was necessary to reflect the true nature of English to see whether a testtaker could handle the language in more true-to-life situations. Enter the Internet, the ultimate medium.

With the Next Generation iBT TOEFL, students go on-line and take the test directly from ETS at test centers throughout the world. There are roughly forty-five sessions a year, all on Fridays or Saturdays. Details can be found on the ETS web site at http://www.ets.org. The iBT, Internet-based test, is an integration of all four language skills - reading, listening, speaking, and writing - in which grammar plays a more minor but still a necessary component. In other words, there is no longer a grammar section on the TOEFL, but grammar is taken into consideration in the evaluation of both the speaking and writing sections. Another change is in the scoring. Whereas the computer-based TOEFL was scored out of 300, the iBT is scored out of 120, 30 in each of the four skills. To succeed in this new format, students need to be good note takers as they will be required to read passages and then listen to lectures or long conversations in order to respond either orally or by writing to questions, usually about how the written material relates to the listening material. The language skills of gist, details, inferences, vocabulary, reference, and insertion are still tested along with the new skills of paraphrasing and determining overall organization and purpose. The addition of these new skills, along with the integration of the sections, makes the Next Generation iBT TOEFL a more valid evaluation of a student’s real-life language skills and his or her ability to succeed in a real academic setting.

Since preparing for the Next Generation iBT TOEFL is challenging, a student is well advised to take a class or join a study group to develop the necessary skills to pass. Also, it is essential that a student get a good preparation textbook, but there are only a few that have kept up with the changes in the test, such as Longman Preparation Course for the TOEFL Test , Next Generation iBT and Delta’s Key to the Next Generation TOEFL Test. Many private and community colleges offer one- or two-term preparation courses, but there may be prerequisites a student must satisfy before being admitted to these classes. There is an alternative, however, for people who want to bypass prerequisites or are unable to invest three to six months preparation time. The TEST PREP Team offers a 45-hour intensive TOEFL Preparation Course over ten Saturdays. This course is available only in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Information on this course, as well as a number of learning tools to help students prepare by themselves, is available at http://study4toefl.com, but hurry - the next class starts on October 8th.

Ambien has been teaching ESL at the college level since 1989 and, as a TOEFL specialist, has been helping students get high TOEFL scores since 1997. He is friendly, personable, kind, patient, supportive and motivating. Ambien is certified as a specialist in the Next Generation iBT TOEFL.

The TOEFL test is a measurement of English ability, and many universities in the United States require a certain score on the TOEFL for admission. To achieve a higher score on the TOEFL, students must improve their English language skills. The CESL intensive English program helps students improve all their English language skills for the TOEFL. The best way to get a higher score on the TOEFL is to increase your English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. There are many opportunities to improve your skills at CESL.

Level 10-30 At these beginning levels, your teachers will guide you in the most efficient way to improve your English skills and ultimately, your TOEFL score. In addition to your class work, you should read, write, listen to, and speak English as much as possible.

Level 40-50 In addition to the above, at this level, it is a good idea to work on integrating your skills. For example, listen to the news and take notes. Read a short novel and write a critique of it. Participate in discussion groups and get a conversation partner. Read and discuss academic subjects. Doing well in your Listening, Speaking, Reading , Writing, and Grammar classes is the best way to quickly improve your TOEFL score. Pay attention to your teacher's comments about your grammatical errors and focus on eliminating them.

Level 60-70 At these levels, your Basic English skills have developed to create a good foundation in English. At this point, in addition to increasing your reading level and speed, you can listen to longer lectures on academic topics, take notes, summarize and synthesize information. It may also be a good idea to take a course in Test Taking Skills. This course will not necessarily improve your English, but it could decrease test anxiety and teach you some techniques at taking tests efficiently. It would also be a good idea to focus on your weakest skill by taking an elective class that will give you more practice on that skill.

Individual Practice CESL students can use CESL Lab TOEFL materials or on-line TOEFL practice. Students can check out a TOEFL Preparation CD to use at any time in the CESL lab. Students can take a pre-test and discover the skills they need to work on. Then they can do exercises on those specific skills. A lab monitor will help you get started. You will find links to these, otherTOEFL, and many language Resources on CESL's library web page Resources for Students at http://www.cesl.arizona.edu/resourcesforstudents.html

(2) Англи хэлээ ашиглан байнга бичиж бай. Бичээд л бай.

(3) Болж өгвөл Англи хэл дээр яаж “бичих” тухай ном олж унш. Ялангуяа дараах хоёр номыг зөвлөж байна: Elements of Style, by William Strunk Jr., E.B. White; The Write Way: The S.P.E.L.L. Guide to Real-Life Writing, by Richard Dowis, Richard Lederer

(4) Practice Test-г сайн хий.

Critical Reading

(1) Sentence Completion, Passage Based Reading гэсэн хоёр төрлийн асуултууд ирнэ.

(2) Critical Reading бусад тестүүдийг бодвол харьцангуй хүнд. Тиймээс сайн бэлд.

Яаж бэлдэх вэ?

(1) Critical Reading

(5) Асуулт болгон a, b, c, d, e гэсэн 5-н сонголттой.

SAT II Subject Tests

Сэдэв: Writing, Literature, US History, World History, Mathematics Level I, Mathematics Level II, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chinese with Listening, French, French with Listening, German, German with Listening, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese with Listening, Korean with Listening, Latin, Spanish, Spanish with Listening, ELPT

Яаж бэлдэх вэ?

(1) Тухайн сэдэвтээ сайн бай.

(2) Сэдэвтэйгээ холбогдсон үг хэллэгүүдийг мэдэж ав.

(3) Practice Test буюу туршлагын тестийг сайн хийж бай.

Internet Worksheet: On-line TOEFL Materials

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the move to the computerized TOEFL test, more and more TOEFL materials are appearing on-line every day. Many of these materials provide general information on the TOEFL and how its administration is changing. Other materials provide practice exercises and tutorials. Some sites allow you to complete exercises on-line. Others allow you to download exercises. Still other sites allow you to order computerized practice materials for the TOEFL.

Today, we are going to explore several of these TOEFL prep web sites. Visit each one, complete the practice exercises, and read for any general information you may be lacking.

TOEFL Practice Exercises

http://www.stuff.co.uk/toefl.htm

Note: This site requires Shockwave. If your computer does not have Shockwave, you can download it for free at this site. (Please be prepared for this procedure to take a few minutes.)

This site is home to on-line practice exercises for the TOEFL. As you answer the questions, the computer keeps track of how many you get correct and your time.

TOEFL Prep

Note: This site requires Shockwave. If your computer does not have Shockwave, you can download it for free at this site. (Please be prepared for this procedure to take a few minutes.)

This extensive site includes general information on the TOEFL and practice exercises for all three sections of the TOEFL. Though these exercises must be downloaded before you can complete them, the download process is relatively fast. Explanations for why a particular answer is correct are given at this site, To begin doing the practice exercises, click on TOEFL Prep under Menu. You can also find lots more practice exercises (including listening excerpts and reading passages listed by topic) under Old TOEFL Files.

If you are interested in taking the TOEIC, this is a valuable site for you. Click on number 11 (TOEIC Questions) under Menu. Here you will find more than 600 practice questions for the TOEIC. You’ll also find a short list of links to other similar sites. In addition, there are more TOEIC practice questions under the Old TOEFL Files link.

@testwise

http://testwise.com/

Though this site mainly advertises different materials you can buy to help study for the TOEFL, it also includes practice questions. To begin the practice exercises, click on Review the TOEFL Test—Free.

TOEFL Online

http://www.toefl.org/

This is the "official" TOEFL web site; that means it’s hosted by ETS, the same people who administer the TOEFL. If you’re looking for accurate information on the TOEFL and how it’s changing, this is the place to get that information.

This site also includes some practice exercises. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Under Directories, click on Test Takers. Scroll down and click on Test Preparation Materials. Now, click on Practice Question Online—Free.
